Computers, Dust and Overheating

Those air vents on your computer might give the system an aggressive look, but they’re not just for show. This is where cool air gets pulled into your computer and blown over the internal components before being expelled from the rear or side. The electrical components in a computer generate heat, and fans inside the computer help move the air to keep the components cooled to normal operating temperatures. Inadequate cooling can cause excess heat which forces the fan to run constantly, can damage components, and limit the speed of the CPU. One of the common causes of the excessive heat is clogged vents which will prevent your air cooling scheme from working.

Symptoms of heat issues and causes of excessive heat can be:
Windows stops responding during use.
Computer running slower than normal
Fans inside the computer become louder because they are spinning faster to try and remove the heat.
Games stop responding during play.
When starting the computer, it sometimes stops at a black screen and does not open into Windows. Windows usually stops responding when it does open.
Windows 7, Vista, XP – Computer unexpectedly restarts or displays a blue fault message.

Regular maintenance is the best way to keep the dust levels under control. How often this needs to be done depends on a few factors. This includes how often the computer is used, how dusty the room or environment is and how warm the ambient temperature is. Dust removal is best done with a can of compressed air.   1. I remember with my last computer I got an “Overclocking error”
    blue screen of death soon after turning on my computer
    I then gave my computer a thorough dusting and turned it on and it worked perfectly
    I then realized that I was fortunate enough that my hardware detected the excess heat and Interpreted it as a failed attempt to overclock my CPU (overclocking produces more heat) and shut down my computer before my CPU became a blob of molten silicon
