Definition of Geek

In general terms the word geek is a slang term for odd or non-mainstream people, with different connotations ranging from “a computer expert or enthusiast” to “a person heavily interested in a hobby”, with a general pejorative meaning of “a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual”

Historically in the 19th century, in North-America, the term geek referred to a freak in circus side-shows. In some cases, its performance included biting the head off a live chicken. The only Geek reference in the 1976 edition of the American Heritage Dictionary was the Geek definition regarding geek shows.

A more modern understanding of the word Geek is as a person who is interested in technology, especially computing and new media. Geeks are adept with computers, and associated technologies.
