Every device connected to the Internet is assigned a unique number known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses consist of four numbers separated by periods and look something like 192.168.0.1
Since these numbers are usually assigned to Internet service providers within region-based blocks, an IP address can often be used to identify the region or country from which a computer is connecting to the Internet. An IP address can sometimes be used to show the user’s general geographic location.
An IP address can be either static or dynamic. A static IP doesn’t change so the address remains the same over time. A dynamic IP is issued out of a pool of IP addresses and can potentially change day to day. For the average user’s requirements a dynamic IP address is adequate. A static IP address is useful if you need to host a website, email server or if you need to connect to your computers and / or network remotely.
